The Art of Giving Project

DONATE AND TRANSFORM A LIFE

Assistive Devices/Technology enables people to live healthy, productive, independent, and dignified lives, and to participate in education, the labour market and civic life. The primary purpose of such assistive devices is to maintain or improve an individual’s functioning and independence thereby promoting their well-being. Examples of assistive products and devices include wheelchairs, walkers, canes, hearing aids, spectacles, communication aids, prostheses and devices that support memory, among many others.

However, many people who live with disabilities, both children and adults, do not have access to such technology. The reasons for this are many, but mostly they have to do with the cost and availability of assistive products, and also lack of awareness. And without access to appropriate assistive aids and devices, many remain excluded, isolated, and locked into poverty.

The Art of Giving Project is a programme under the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. The initiative was the outcome of feedback received by the Office stating that such a platform is needed to give space to citizens to get involved towards the support of persons with disabilities in need of assistive aids and devices.

While there are several Government schemes through which assistive aids and devices, such as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, hearing aids, etc, are provided free to persons with disabilities, requests and applications are received by the Office throughout the year. The objective of the Project is to ensure that those who need it most get access to such facilities at the earliest.
